One day

You might find yourself having to exit somewhere in an emergency situation
.
When things go wrong they usually do so very quickly
.
Very quickly
.
Seldom is there time to talk to the people or friends you might be with
.
So think of this
.
If you panic then trouble for you
.
If you have no clue what to do then trouble for you
.
To avoid increasing your difficulties in such a situation consider
.
The main thing in any disaster experience is having good situational awareness
.
This means understanding the environment you're in
.
Whether this is a plane, train, ship, bus, subway train or building
.
Know where your nearest exits are and how you'd escape in a hurry.
.
If you're travelling with family or friends, plan what you would do in an emergency
.
This does not mean a scary discussion
.
It does mean that you are all aware of what you would do should things go wrong
.
Things like whether you'd try to reunite before escaping, or meet outside
.
Do you choose seats close to an exit?
.
Do you even notice where the exits are?
.
Check yourself on this next time you go out somewhere, anywhere
.
Imagine the lights went out and you could not see easily
.
Do you ever think of counting the rows to your nearest two exits in case it becomes too dark to see?
.
In emergencies people tend to behave quite rationally contrary to what Hollywood might like to portray in its movies
.
They tend to help each other, too
.
This is not the point though we cannot assume anything about emergencies other than we need to know ourselves and what we will do
.
As the scouts say be prepared
