Technological addiction

What drives our addiction to technology?

Underneath all addictions there is a real need that the addiction promises to meet.

The cocaine says I will make you feel great

I will give you a real buzz

For a short time it does just that

But over time the promise is a lie

A lie that leaves the true need unmet.

.
A lie that turns the promise into addiction
.
The same goes for technology
.
Technology being driven by an imperative to control nature
.
A technology driven by unmet needs.
.
Both addictions and technology stem from our unmet needs
.
Needs that we all feel in different ways
.
And there is one though that we all share
.
The anxiety and fear endemic to modern life
.
As a near-universal feeling of meaninglessness
.
As a relentless feeling from which we can only ever be temporarily freed
.
Experienced by us as a pervasive superficiality and phoniness.
.
It is a feeling that something is missing.
.
Some people call it a hole in the soul.
.
What we are seeking in our technological addiction is nothing less than our lost wholeness
.
And its recovery is what lies on the other side of the imminent collapse of the regime of separation.
.
For finally we are beginning to see the nonsense of technological superiority
.
An addiction that has consumed our time and energy
.
One tsunami and nature shows the futility of even trying to control her
.
Indeed why would we want to when cooperation is so much more beneficial?
.
We have a window of chance
.
An opportunity to work with nature
.
Letting go of our addictions to false ideas particularly to technology that can only ever provide temporary release
.
Technology can never answer the needs of our soul
.
Nor can the pursuit of control over nature ever succeed
.
Technological addiction just brings us more wanting like any other addiction
.
Addiction is no freedom
