Human consciousness

Try and form some simple concept of the meaning of the endless and beginningless eternity and of the Boundless

And drop it there: unceasing life, endless activity, never-ending life and consciousness in unceasing motion everywhere.

The wise ancients never bothered their heads much about any foolish attempt to fathom the Boundless or the limitless Eternal.

They recognised the reality of being

And let it go at that

Knowing well that an ever-growing knowledge of the universal life

Was and is all that human intelligence could ever attain to by an ever-expanding consciousness.

Blame and nasty people

So easy to do

Blame the other person

Many people in business like to blame others
.
People in other organisations like to blame others

Often rationalising that this is OK because if they didn't then they would have to accept the blame

This just won't do

So blame the other person

Set them up

Little word here

Little word there

Nothing too direct

Even pretend to support them while sticking the knife in

How often have you seen this done?

Or did you?

Hope not because these things come back on us

In an office environment it often seems like the bad guys move inexorably upwards

Teflon coated nothing sticking

Up and up they move

So often we feel irritation or more at the apparent injustice of life

The unfairness of it all

Stop right there

Judgement is not ours

Not at all

It is quite simply not our business

We might feel strongly that it is

Our position and career might be at risk

Yes they might

And yet when we get further down the road, we might understand that we should have left the company of our own accord

That indeed being asked to leave did us a favour

That our life moved in ways that it could not have done otherwise

Hard to accept at the time yet now we can see what a big favour it did us

A thought or two

Never regret, we are none of us smart enough to know all the reasons why something happens

Be honest hold onto your integrity

Many companies or businesses reflect the boss and his or her morality

If your top management are unpleasant dishonest people then guess what type of people they like to hire?

Guess what behaviour they support

Who they promote

Who they listen to

If you do not fit in this pattern, then lucky you to get out or be forced out before you have to compromise your own values

Regret nothing, move on

Life brings knocks, so take them

Life also rewards those who behave well

Yes, it might not seem so but over a lifetime nature rewards us

Not maybe in monetary terms

Nature didn't put us here to collect money

That's a man game

Nature wants you to have many experiences

And for sure many will not be easy

However over a life of effort and trying to do our best we learn so much more than those who brown nose and lie

We grow and learn to be more considerate and helpful, to compromise

And in these troubled, difficult times these qualities might not be so fashionable

They are though well suited to our planetary and personal needs

And importantly this allows us to feel OK with ourselves
.
So let the liars and brown nosers do their thing
.
Move on

Be rather nice

To know we have more than one life

She said to me

I realised that she had never really thought about death in any clear way

Never actually thought about it at all

Death is not a polite subject

Nor is what you think about it to be discussed in any serious way

It is though one thing we will all experience

It is something that will happen to people we know

it will usually happen to our parents before us

Our relatives will die too

Some friends as well

And if you live to a ripe old age as they say then most of those you know will go before you

Go before you, die that is

Why do we have such an aversion to using the word death or discussing what it is?

Sad picture because once we know the truth about what it is and what it is not then we can relax

Death is merely a transition from one state to another

Death can be understood as a truth and not as a fairy tale of grotesque proportions

The modern Christian understanding of death is pretty grotesque if you think about it

A distortion of the original Christ and Christian teachings

So most people do not think about death not least of all because popular ideas about it are pretty childish

Why would any loving God give you one life in which to be judged for all eternity when some are born into wealth and privilege and others into nightmare lives?

If there is a God it is highly doubtful that he or she is going to want billions of people sitting around for ever and ever doing nothing

Nor is he likely to arrange things in the way it is said to be

Well if you never think about it which is what most people tend to do then pressure builds up

Pressure builds up because you are getting older and people around you are too

Parents are getting older, dying even

Still people do not want to think

Are they stupid?

Methinks not

Just how can you think about something where there is so much confusion of different ideas?

Really?

Not so there are only a few options

You die and that is it, finish all over atoms to atoms, dust to dust, finita la musica

You die and go to heaven or hell for ever and ever

You die and come back as a human to continue your learning and growing

The first option is common with people today and is the easy way out because it requires no thinking but does not stand up to much scrutiny either.

The idea that life on this planet started from a random interaction of chemicals is as silly as mathematically it is not realistic nor feasible

This option has nothing to say about the evolution of consciousness which Darwin and others have never been able to explain nor can it produce any science to support the idea of one life without meaning or purpose

The second idea that you die and go to heaven or hell for ever and ever sounds very unjust after one life, but even were it so how long is ever and ever, a billion, a trillion years?

And this for ever and ever with people you liked or didn't like and when people talk about their loved ones what do they mean?

When they were young or when they were old how can that work and what if the loved one does not want to be with you for that indefinite period of time?

I don't think so besides it is contrary to nature's methods in any other field

So yes the truth about death is in the third option

It makes sense where the others do not

Only through many lives can we learn all that there is to learn

Only through a life of many years can we learn much about this life

So many many lives are needed to learn all that we can learn

Karma and reincarnation explain what the others cannot

Do not really even attempt

So why do we have this confusion?

Are we unprepared to think for ourselves?

So my reply was to explain how things really work, which once you buy into it removes many doubts

We no longer have to worry about things in the same way

The third option is reincarnation which is able with karma to explain everything on the planet in a way that the other two cannot

Reincarnation is also able to explain why we are here in a way the other two cannot as reincarnation provides for exact justice to each individual in every civilisation alike

We are all individually responsible for the karma we create

So yes once she got it she found it rather nice

Me too, made me smile thinking of my own doubts when I started trying to understand

Growing tomatoes

Women gardeners' voices speed up growth of tomato plants much more than men's, it has been found.

In an experiment run over a month, it was found that tomato plants grew up to two inches taller if they were serenaded by the dulcet tones of a female rather than a male.

The findings vindicate comments made by Prince Charles that he talks to his plants although they suggest that for maximum results he would be better off recruiting the Duchess of Cornwall.

Appropriately the most effective talk came from Sarah Darwin, whose great-great grandfather was legendary botanist Charles Darwin, one of the founding fathers of the RHS' Scientific Committee.

She read a read a passage from the On the Origin of Species and beat nine other 'voices'.

Her plant grew nearly two inches taller than the best performing male and half an inch higher than her nearest competitor.

Colin Crosbie, Garden Superintendent at RHS, said: "We predicted that the male voice would be more effective but it turned out that the ladies were far better than the gentlemen.

We just don't why.

It could be that they have a greater range of pitch and tone that affects the sound waves that hit the plant. Sound waves are an environmental effect just like rain or light

The experiment began in April at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, with open auditions for the public to record excerpts from John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids, Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream and Darwin's On the Origin of Species.

A variety of voices was then picked to play to 10 tomato plants over a month.

Every plant was played a voice through headphones connected to the plant pot, and the conditions for all the plants remained the same throughout the experiment.

To ensure the experiment was fair, two control plants were also left to grow in silence.

The results showed that women on average saw their plants rise by an inch on their male counterparts.

Some men were so bad that their plants actually grew less than a plant that was left completely alone.

Miss Darwin said, "I think it is an honour to have a voice that can make tomatoes grow, and especially fitting because for a number of years I have been studying wild tomatoes from the Galapagos Islands at the Natural History Museum in London.

I'm not sure if it's my dulcet tones or the text that I read from 'On the Origin of Species' that made the plant sit up and listen, but either way I think it is great fun and I'm proud of my new title.

Glass

For years, the basic composition of soda-lime glass has not changed much, said Harrie J. Stevens, director of the Center for Glass Research at Alfred University.
.
It’s the same glass, more or less, that is used for the windows in your home and the jar of jam in your fridge — and that old elixir bottle you bought at an antique store.
.
It’s basic stuff, but far from simple. “Of course, glass is an unusual material,” said James Carpenter of James Carpenter Design Associates, who has designed glass facades and other structures and was a consultant for the glassmaker Corning in the 1970s.

Since we don’t really know what it is
.
Although there has long been debate as to whether glass is a solid or liquid, it is now usually described as an amorphous solid (there is no evidence that it flows, extremely slowly, over time as a liquid).

The noncrystalline structure is achieved by relatively rapid cooling below what is referred to as the glass transition temperature, around 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit for the soda-lime variety.

Cooled further and cut, pristine glass is very strong.

But like a new car that plummets in value the moment it is driven off the lot, glass starts to lose its strength the instant it’s made.

Tiny cracks begin to form through contact with other surfaces, or even with water vapor and carbon dioxide.

If you take the freshly made surface and blow on it with your breath, you’ve reduced the strength of glass by a factor of two, said Suresh Gulati, a mechanical engineer and self-described “strength man” who retired in 2000 after 33 years at Corning but still works for the company as a consultant.
.
Even one gas molecule can break a silicon-oxygen bond in glass, generating a defect, said Carlo G. Pantano, a professor of materials science at Pennsylvania State University

While glass is very strong in compression, tensile stresses will make these tiny fissures start to grow, bond by bond.

That’s what makes glass break, Dr. Pantano said.

And if it doesn’t break, it weakens it

Protective coatings are one way to avoid new cracks, although they can affect transparency, which is the main reason for using glass in the first place.

Changing the glass recipe can also make it harder for cracks to form and propagate.

There is some evidence that you can modify the composition to make it innately stronger, Dr. Stevens said, although that risks altering other properties or making the glass too costly.

The manufacturing process can be modified, too, to keep the surfaces of the glass as pristine as possible.

In one technique, used for laptop glass, molten glass is pumped into a V-shaped trough, spills over on both sides and flows down the outside of the V, joining together at the bottom into a sheet that continues to move downward as it cools.

This way, each side of the sheet is a “melt surface,” exposed only to the air and not touched by any part of the equipment.

For structural purposes, glass is often strengthened the old-fashioned way — by tempering.

This puts the surface under compression, so that even more tensile force is needed for cracks to grow.

For flat glass, heat tempering is most often used. William LaCourse, a professor at Alfred, said the process took advantage of one property of glass — that when it cools slowly it becomes denser.

By rapidly cooling the exterior of a sheet (usually with air), the surface stays less dense.

Inside it’s still hot, and tries to cool to a more dense structure, Dr. LaCourse said.

This pulls the surface into compression.
In chemical tempering, sodium ions in the surface are replaced with potassium ions, which are about 30 percent larger.

It’s like taking a suitcase full of summer-weight clothes and replacing the top layer with winter-weight items; the suitcase will bulge at the seams when you try to close it.

Glass cannot bulge at the seams, so the surface becomes compressed.

Tempered glass may take longer to crack, but it can still break.

Because surface compression must be balanced by interior tension, when tempered glass does break it forms many more smaller pieces than untempered glass, as more fracture lines release more energy.

The more it is strengthened the more pieces it will fly into, Dr. Gulati said.

An extreme example of this is a Prince Rupert’s drop, a small glass ball with a long tail formed by dropping molten glass into water.

You can pound on the ball end with a hammer and it will not break, but snip off the tail and the ball will explode into tiny pieces as the tensile forces are released.

In structural applications, breaking into smaller pieces is often preferred, because these have less chance of causing injury.

But tempering alone is usually not enough.

A primary concern when building with glass is what happens if and when a component breaks — what engineers call “post-failure behavior.”

Unlike steel or other materials, glass does not deform or otherwise give advance warning of failure.

If breakage occurs, maintaining the integrity of the structure is paramount so that people on or below it are safe.

That’s where lamination comes in.

In a typical project, glass sheets are bonded with thin polymer interlayers.

The interlayers add strength and, should one of the glass layers break, keep the structure together, and the pieces from falling.

But lamination makes fabricating glass for structural uses very difficult.

Since cutting into tempered glass causes it to break, each sheet must be polished and drilled for the connecting fittings before it is tempered.

Tolerances are extremely small, to avoid potentially destructive stresses in the assembled structure.

It’s doable, said Lou Cerny of MTH Industries, who managed the installation at the Sears Tower, where the tolerances were one-sixteenth of an inch. There’s just not a lot of people who want to get involved in it.
.
No wonder, then, that those who build with glass look forward to a day when their structures will be unencumbered by metal or other materials.
.
My goal has always been to reduce the amount of fittings in glass, said Mr. O’Callaghan, whose Apple staircases use stainless steel and, occasionally, titanium to join the glass components.
.
Already, some engineers are using different glass shapes to reduce the dependence on metal.

Rob Nijsse, a professor at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and a structural engineer with the firm ABT Belgium, has used large sheets of corrugated glass, mounted vertically, for window walls in a concert hall in Porto, Portugal, and a museum being built in Antwerp, Belgium.

The shape helps stiffen the glass against wind loads.

Other designers think about using different kinds of glass.

There are so many amazing types of glass available, Mr. Carpenter said.

There’s an enormous potential to transfer some of their characteristics into architectural uses.
.
Using a glass that does not expand much when heated, for example, would enable components to be welded together, forming, in effect, a continuous piece of glass.

Conventional soda-lime glass expands too much, so welding introduces stresses that can lead to failure.

Researchers at Delft have experimented with welding glass components.

But low-expansion glass is much costlier than soda-lime glass.

Other engineers are starting to use adhesives to join glass directly to glass. Lucio Blandini, an engineer with Werner Sobek Engineering and Design in Stuttgart, Germany, used adhesives to create a thin glass dome, 28 feet across, for his doctoral thesis in a clearing in Stuttgart.

I think adhesives are the most promising connection device, Dr. Blandini said.

It allows glass to keep its aesthetic qualities.

His firm is using adhesives in parts of structures being built at the University of Chicago and in Dubai.

But the long-term strength and reliability of adhesives has not been proved, so most people who work in glass think an all-glued structure is a long way off.

It’ll be awhile before we see that.

Old stories must die

Powerful words - those that affect physical reality beyond the capacity of one set of hands - are those that create a story that enrolls other people.

By a story, I mean a system of meaning that focuses human intention and assigns roles to those involved in that story.

Here are some examples of stories: America, France, money, the government, property, marriage, the War on Drugs, the War on Terror, Citibank.

That these things are stories becomes clear when people stop believing them.

When people lose confidence in a government, it is no longer a government but just a bunch of men and women in suits.

When people lose confidence in a currency, it becomes mere slips of paper.

When people stop agreeing that your possessions are "yours," they become just things.

Stories have their own life cycle.

Stories that were once true and potent grow old and infirm, and eventually they die.

Today this is happening to some of our deepest stories, the great myths of our civilization.

In particular, two related stories have created the world we know today, and both of them are nearing their end.

Ultimately, it is because they have entered their terminal phase that we have the ubiquitous matrix of lies
.
Lies have a way of growing until they consume all life, that we have nearly forgotten what the truth feels like.
.
The first of these world-creating stories is the Story of Ascent.
.
It is our story of the people.
.
It says the humanity has risen from a state of nature, a state of scientific ignorance and technological impotence, to becoming nature's lords and masters.
.
We have harnessed natural forces, penetrated the mysteries of the universe, overcome natural limitations with technology.
.
Someday, says the story, our understanding and control will be complete, thanks to nanotechnology, space travel, infinite energy, social and genetic engineering, etc.
.
Humanity: conquerors of nature, onward and upward forever!
.
The second defining story of our civilization is our Story of Self: that we are discrete and separate beings living in an objective universe.
.
You and I are separate - mutually dependent, perhaps, in a practical way, but independent of each other or anyone else for our basic being-ness.
.
From the selfish gene of biology to the rational actor of economics to the flesh-encapsulated soul of religion, all of our ideologies are aligned with our story of self.
.
And, from the medical system to the criminal justice system to the money system, all of our social institutions enact it.
.
Both of these defining stories are crumbling around us.
.
Neither is true any more.
.
Few people today greet the Story of Ascent with the same near-universal fervor of, say, the 1950s, as all the promises of technotopia (the end of disease, unlimited energy, a leisure society, space colonies) fade into legend.
.
Collapse, not ascent, is the new meme, and this collapse ushers in new realization of connectedness, of interdependency, and along with it the end of the story of the discrete and separate self.
.
The independent, unencumbered man of reason no longer beckons as an ideal: we crave now community, intimacy and connection.
.
It is time now to tell a new Story of the People and a new Story of Self.
.
The first might be something like, "A peaceful humanity living in co-creative partnership with a wild garden earth."
.
It is a humanity that no longer takes unthinkingly from Mother Earth, but a humanity that co-creates and coevolves together with Lover Earth, starting, I think, with an initial centuries-long phase of healing the wounds to nature and the indigenous spirit that civilization has inflicted.
.
The second new story is the connected self: a nexus of relationships, a node in the cosmic cycle of gifts, an individual dependent not only for survival, but for her very being, on her relationship to all that was Other

And then................

And so it shall be - 5

Yet, as in every advance that nature makes, as the cycles in their wheeling course come round, there are some who lag behind and lose sight of their heritage

Blinded by the desire of personal gain, by ambition and love of power so that today there are some who refuse the opportunity that for ages their souls have waited for

The cycles have brought them and ourselves to the point of former achievement and former failure

We and they have met in the past as in this life, and shall meet again in the future

And by our action today we are forging the links that shall help or mar their progress, as well as our own and that of all humanity, in the future

And so it is now as it was then - 4

We make our own bodies

We make our own lives
.
We make our own destinies
.
And we are responsible for it all
.
Spiritually, morally, intellectually, psychically, and even physically
.
It is a manly doctrine
.
There is not room in it for moral cowardice
.
No room in it for casting our responsibility upon the shoulders of another
.
God, angel, man or demon

They had ideas back then too - 3

An honest whole hearted belief in the law of karma in it's relation to life as a whole would alone completely change the character of our civilisation

This may, perhaps, seem an extravagant claim to those not understanding its deep meaning

Yet the mere broadening of the present day outlook would in itself be a wonderful thing

Human minds are now concentrated on one physical incarnation ,a mere wink of the eye in the souls history

And all events contained in it assume an undue importance in one way and a lack of importance in another

The sense of proportion and perspective is absolutely lost and can only be regained by lifting the veil and revealing the illimitable vistas beyond

Simple common sense would then call into play the faculties of reflection and judgement to say nothing of the awakening in the spiritual nature

Gradually self-discipline would grow, beginning, perhaps, in self interest, but merging by degrees into something greater, until the character is radically altered

Self-pity and whining would be stamped out when the realisation came that misfortunes had been self-induced, and courage, will, and endurance would be evoked

There would be less condemnation and uncharitable criticism, and more kindness, more patience with the failings of others, if a deeper understanding of the difficulties as well as the possibilities in human nature were in the human race

We all know that among the subtle poisons of our life is the tendency to criticise others, to judge them unkindly, to impute of them unworthy motives etc

And we also know how this takes the edge off every pleasure, and on the contrary, how fresh and clear the air is when suspicion is absent and an atmosphere of healthy sympathy exists

The knowledge that one is master of his own destiny would remove the fear that at any time, out of the blue, an avalanche of misfortune might be precipitated, once that the old records are cleaned up and the knowledge that these old records themselves can be softened in their results or even sometimes neutralized by the force of will intelligently directed, would arouse courage

The easy going irresponsibilities, the indifferent, would gradually awaken if the truth of karma were in the minds of the majority, for by degrees, these sleepers would feel such an invigorating mental atmosphere

Further when the teaching of karma is realized, people will not seek to get something for nothing, or envy those who have more than themselves

They will know that time and the rolling cycles adjust all wrongs, that the only way to get life's treasures is to concentrate on the duty in hand and leave the results to the Law
